However, Jaromer's study of the sword fell by the wayside almost immediately after reaching adulthood, as he took up that most monetarily draining of vices, gambling. And, unfortunately for him, he was extremely bad at it. By the time his family cut him off, he had exhausted all but a small bit of his stipend, and was dependent on begging his parents for more money almost every fortnight. Unfortunately for everybody involved, the loss of his parent's charity only made things worse, as Jaromer then turned to borrowing money from just about anybody that would lend him some. This situation continued for several more months as he dug himself deeper and deeper into debt, until the day he hit rock bottom, and found himself in a ditch outside a tavern, wearing only his underclothes, everything else having been gambled away after he ran out of money. The next morning, after being thrown out of town by the guard and with the debt collectors closing in, Jaromer had a rare moment of clarity, and both forever foreswore gambling, and committed to making back the money he owed, by the only means he had left: his (mediocre) skill with the sword. Over the next year, he proceeded to do exactly that, evading his debtors until he got out of the country, then adventuring west, slowly making back the money, and, in a twist his family and debtors would have considered to have been nothing less than a miracle, refused to so much as touch a set of dice, or even look in the direction of a race. Jaromer is outwardly easygoing, albeit somewhat impulsive, but tends to get frustrated when things don't go his way, and tends to keep trying the same failed approach over and over again, even when the best course of action is obviously something else. As a noble, he was taught the importance of honor from birth, but currently needs money badly, often leaving his motivations a battle between the two--he would rather die than betray a companion, but his actions often have a distinctly mercenary tint to them.
